EVENTS AND SERVICES FOR VETERANS

The 16th annual Tunnel to Towers 5k to benefit the Stephen Siller Foundation, providing services for catastrophically injured First Responders, Veterans and their families, has been re-scheduled. Join Easy 93.1 at Huizenga Plaza, 32 East Las Olas Blvd, Saturday, September 23rd, beginning at 7:30 a.m. It’s a fun and inspirational morning, with First Responders from all over South Florida running in full gear!

The Honor Flight South Florida originally scheduled for September 9th has been rescheduled due to Hurricane Irma. The Honor Flight will go forward on September 23rd, flying Veterans to Washington D.C. for a day to tour the War Memorials. This a really unique flight as not only are WWII and Korean Veterans on the Flight but instead of a civilian guardian who usually accompanies the Veteran they will be accompanied by a Vietnam Veteran who will be designated as the Elite Guradian to the WWII or Korean Veteran. You are invited to join the crowd welcoming the Veterans back from their flight at Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport that evening. Find all the information about Honor Flights and how you can nominate a Veteran to be honored here.

Join Easy 93.1 in honoring our Veterans by supporting Mission United – helping Veterans with employment, legal, health, educational services and more. Find details at MissionUnited.org.

--------------- HURRICANE SEASON --------------

Hurricane Season runs from June 1st through November 30th.
Forecasters are expecting a busier than usual season in 2017:
Predictions call for 11 - 17 named storms.
5 - 9 of which could become hurricanes.
2 - 4 of which could become major hurricanes.

No matter how many storms form, that does not mean any will make landfall in the U.S. or in South Florida. But all it takes is one storm to cause damage. Easy 93.1 urges you to be prepared.

Here are links to important information about Hurricane Readiness and what do before, during and after a storm:

The Humane Society of Broward County is in dire need of newspapers and bath towels. The Shelter is full up with kittens and pocket pets (bunnies, gerbils, hamsters, etc.) and newspaper is used to line their cages. It helps keep the animals warm and also keeps the cages sanitary because the paper is absorbent and disposable.

If you have a collection of papers in your home waiting to go the recycle bin, HSBC asks that you PLEASE donate them to the shelter instead. Even one issue can help a handful of pets.

See more about the Humane Society and pets that are up for adoptions here.

American Heart Association / Go Red For Women

Easy 93.1 partners with the American Heart Association year-round to raise awareness of the issue of women and heart disease.

Why it Matters: #lifeiswhy

The American Heart Association's Go Red For Women Campaign reminds you that heart disease is still the #1 killer of women. 1 in 3 women will die of heart disease - yet 80% of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes.

Know your numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and body mass index / BMI) and schedule your annual well-woman visit. Learn more about the causes, your risk factors, and prevention tips here.

Kids' Health, courtesy of the American Heart Association:

THE AHA says lowering your kids' sodium intake now can protect their health later. Visit www.sodiumbreakup.heart.org for tips on how to stay healthy through the school year.
